Plant intersectional peonies in fall, as with herbaceous peonies.
Plant in sun in rich, well-drained soil, if possible where snow accumulates.
Set the crowns 5 to 10 centimetres deep, with the upper crown bud at soil level.
Mulch the first year to protect from frost heave.
When late frost kills the foliage, cut the leaves back to 10 centimetres from the ground.
Flowers produced the first year following planting should be removed at the bud stage to encourage the plant to put its energy into producing a stronger, healthier root system. Allow plants to bloom in subsequent years.
Feed lightly but regularly once or twice a year.
Be patient; peonies take time to mature, and improve in size and quantity of bloom; division is rarely, if ever, necessary.
